What are Epoxy Countertops?

Epoxy countertops are created using a multi-layered system of resin and hardener. When mixed, these components chemically react to form a solid, durable plastic surface.

The Artistic Process

Unlike pre-cut slabs of stone, epoxy is poured in liquid form. This allows us to:
  • Customize Colors: Match your cabinets, backsplash, or flooring perfectly.
  • Create Patterns: We manipulate the resin to create veins like Carrara marble, sparkles like granite, or the depth of geodes.
  • Seamless Finish: Because it is poured, there are no seams to trap dirt or bacteria.

Why Choose Epoxy Over Granite or Quartz?

For many Akron homeowners, epoxy is the smarter choice for both budget and durability.

1. Cost-Effective Luxury

Natural stone slabs are expensive to mine, ship, and cut. Epoxy creates the exact same visual appeal for a fraction of the cost—often 30-50% less than mid-range granite.

2. Durability & Resistance

Once cured, our high-performance epoxy is:
  • Heat Resistant: Withstands incidental heat (though we always recommend trivets for hot pans).
  • Scratch Resistant: Tough enough for daily kitchen use.
  • Non-Porous: Unlike granite, which must be sealed annually, epoxy is naturally non-porous. It will not stain from wine, coffee, or beet juice.

3. No Demolition Required (Resurfacing)

This is the biggest advantage. In most cases, we can apply the epoxy directly over your existing countertops.
  • Formica/Laminate: We sand and prime the surface for a permanent bond.
  • Tile: We fill the grout lines to create a smooth, flat surface before pouring.
  • MDF/Wood: We can build custom shapes and islands from scratch.

Our Design Styles: Limitless Possibilities

At Unlimited Designs Flooring & Epoxy, you are the designer. We bring your vision to life.

Faux Marble (Carrara & Calacatta)

The most popular request in Fairlawn and Hudson. We use a white base with subtle grey or gold veining to replicate the timeless elegance of Italian marble—without the worry of staining it with lemon juice.

Granite & Stone Look

Using a technique called "dirty pour" or specific flake additives, we can create the speckled, natural look of granite or soapstone in any color palette you desire.

Metallic & Exotic

For modern lofts in downtown Akron or bar tops in man caves, we use metallic powders (copper, silver, gold, pearl) to create 3D effects that look like molten metal or flowing water.

Live Edge Wood Coatings

Have a beautiful piece of wood? We can pour a crystal-clear "river table" or simply coat the wood in clear epoxy to preserve its natural beauty while making it waterproof and food-safe.

Where Can We Install Epoxy?

Epoxy isn't just for the kitchen. We can transform surfaces throughout your home or business.
  • Kitchen Islands: Make your island the focal point with a contrasting color.
  • Bathroom Vanities: Update a boring white cultured marble sink with a stone look.
  • Bar Tops: Create a durable, glass-like surface for your basement bar or commercial restaurant.
  • Laundry Rooms: Durable surfaces that resist bleach and detergent spills.
  • Outdoor Kitchens: We use UV-stable formulas for covered outdoor patios in Green and Stow.

The Epoxy Countertop Installation Process

We pride ourselves on a clean, efficient process that respects your home.

Step 1: Preparation & Masking

We protect your cabinets, floors, and appliances with plastic sheeting and tape. We then sand the existing surface to create a "mechanical bond" profile.

Step 2: Base Coat Application

We apply a tinted primer/base coat. This seals the substrate and provides the background color for your design.

Step 3: The Creative Pour

This is where the magic happens. We mix the metallic pigments and pour the design layer, manipulating the resin with heat guns, brushes, and trowels to achieve the desired pattern.

Step 3: The Base & Broadcast

This is where the magic happens. We mix the metallic pigments and pour the design layer, manipulating the resin with heat guns, brushes, and trowels to achieve the desired pattern.

Step 4: Top Coat (The Shield)

Once the design cures, we apply a clear, ultra-durable top coat. This final layer provides the ultimate scratch resistance and can be finished in Gloss, Satin, or Matte.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Garage Flooring Specifics

Are epoxy countertops food safe?
Yes. Once fully cured (usually 7 days), the epoxy systems we use are inert and FDA-compliant for incidental food contact. They are safe for kneading dough or preparing food.
How long does the process take?
A typical kitchen transformation takes 2-3 days. Day 1 is prep and pour; Day 2 is the top coat. We recommend waiting 24 hours for light use and 7 days for full cure before placing heavy appliances back on the counter.
Can you fix my damaged laminate?
Yes! If your laminate is peeling or has burn marks, we can repair those areas before pouring the epoxy, saving you the cost of buying new countertops.
Does epoxy scratch?
Like any countertop material (even granite), epoxy can scratch if you drag heavy ceramic pots across it. However, our specialized Ultimate Top Coat makes it highly scratch-resistant. Plus, unlike stone, epoxy can be buffed and polished to remove micro-scratches years down the road.
