The Ultimate Slip-Resistant Solution for Wet & Industrial Environments

Safety, Sanitation, and Strength for Summit County Businesses

At Unlimited Designs Flooring & Epoxy of Akron, we provide flooring solutions that work as hard as you do. Our Sand Broadcast Epoxy Floor Coating (also known as Quartz Flooring) is the most durable, impact-resistant, and safe flooring system available on the market today.
Designed specifically for environments in Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, and Barberton that deal with water, grease, heavy foot traffic, or harsh chemicals, this system utilizes colored quartz sand granules embedded in high-performance epoxy. The result is a floor that is virtually indestructible, completely waterproof, and offers superior grip—even when wet.

What is Sand Broadcast Epoxy?

The "Double Broadcast" Advantage

While a standard epoxy floor might have one layer of coating, our Sand Broadcast system builds a thick, armor-like shield over your concrete.

The Anatomy of a Quartz Floor:
  1. Primer: We bond a penetrating epoxy primer to the diamond-ground concrete.
  2. Base Coat & Broadcast 1: We apply a layer of epoxy and broadcast colored quartz sand until the floor is saturated.
  3. Mid Coat & Broadcast 2: Once cured, we apply another layer of epoxy and broadcast another full layer of sand. This "Double Broadcast" technique creates exceptional thickness and impact resistance.
  4. Grout Coat: We apply a clear binder to lock the sand in place.
  5. Top Coat: A UV-stable Polyaspartic or Urethane sealer provides the final chemical-resistant finish.
This multi-layer process creates a floor that is typically 1/8" to 3/16" thick—twice as thick as a standard garage floor coating.

Where is Sand Broadcast Flooring Used?

Ideal for "Wet" and "Heavy" Zones in Akron

This is not usually a living room floor. It is a workhorse floor designed for specific high-demand applications across Northeast Ohio.

Commercial Kitchens & Food Prep

In restaurants throughout Downtown Akron and Highland Square, grease and water are constant hazards. A sand broadcast floor provides the texture needed to prevent slip-and-fall accidents while forming a seamless "bathtub" effect that prevents bacterial growth in grout lines.

Locker Rooms, Restrooms & Showers

Animal claws can scratch standard coatings. The hardness of quartz sand (a 7 on the Mohs scale) resists scratching from dogs in Fairlawn vet clinics, while the seamless finish prevents urine odors from soaking into the slab.

Veterinary Clinics & Kennels

The texture of a full broadcast system provides grip for bare feet, making it safer for wet areas in Green community centers or backyard pool houses.

Industrial Wash Bays

For manufacturing plants in Norton or Twinsburg, wash-down areas need floors that can handle high-pressure water and harsh detergents without peeling.

Key Benefits for Akron Facility Managers

Why Upgrade from Tile or Bare Concrete?

1. Unmatched Slip Resistance: The texture of the sand granules provides a "sandpaper-like" grip. We can adjust the texture level—rough for a commercial kitchen, or smoother for a hospital hallway—depending on your needs.
2. Decorative Durability: Quartz sand comes in brilliant, UV-stable colors. We can blend "Blue and Gray" for a cool look, or "Red and Tweed" for a warm aesthetic. It looks like high-end terrazzo but costs significantly less and is far more durable.
3. Thermal Shock Resistance: In commercial kitchens, boiling water hits the floor one minute, and ice the next. Our quartz systems can withstand these rapid temperature changes (Thermal Shock) better than standard coatings, which might crack.
4. USDA & FDA Compliance: Our seamless installation, combined with integral cove bases (curving the floor up the wall), meets strict health department codes for food and beverage facilities in Ohio.

Our Installation Process: Precision & Speed

Minimizing Downtime for Your Business

We understand that shutting down a production line or a kitchen costs money. Our Akron-based team works efficiently to get you back up and running.

Step 1: Aggressive Prep We shot-blast or heavily grind the concrete to CSP-3 or CSP-4. We also cut "keyways" around drains and doorways to lock the system in mechanically.
Step 2: The Double Broadcast We apply the base coat and throw the quartz sand to rejection. After curing, we sweep the excess and do it again. This double layering is what gives the floor its incredible compressive strength.
Step 3: The Lock Coat We apply a clear grout coat to fill the voids between the sand grains. This makes the floor cleanable (mops won't get shredded) while maintaining the non-slip texture.
Step 4: The Performance Topcoat We finish with a chemical-resistant Urethane or Polyaspartic that stands up to bleach, acids, and sanitizers used in Akron's commercial industries.

Why Akron Homeowners and Businesses Trust Flake Epoxy Flooring

Local Landmarks, Neighborhoods, and the Akron Advantage

Akron, Ohio is a city with a rich industrial legacy, diverse neighborhoods, and iconic destinations like the Akron Art Museum, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, and the Akron Zoo. Whether your property is nestled near the historic Highland Square, bustling downtown, or along the scenic Cuyahoga Valley National Park, maintaining clean, attractive, and durable floors is essential—especially with Northeast Ohio’s changing seasons.

Akron’s Unique Climate and Flooring Challenges

Akron’s weather is known for its humid summers, snowy winters, and frequent freeze-thaw cycles. This leads to:
  • Concrete sweating or dampness, especially in basements and garages
  • Salt and de-icing chemicals tracked in from winter roads, causing pitting or staining
  • Expansion and contraction in older concrete slabs, leading to cracks and surface wear
Flake epoxy flooring is specifically designed to address these local challenges. Its seamless, non-porous surface prevents moisture intrusion, resists the corrosive effects of road salt, and bridges minor imperfections in aging concrete. The durable topcoat stands up to heavy equipment, foot traffic from events at Canal Park, and even the rigors of hosting friends after a day at Summit Metro Parks.

Enhance Your Property Near Akron’s Landmarks

  • Highland Square & West Hill: Older homes benefit from epoxy’s ability to hide existing concrete flaws, adding modern appeal without expensive slab replacement.
  • Downtown Akron & The University of Akron Area: Businesses, restaurants, and campus facilities enjoy easy-to-clean, eye-catching floors that impress customers and reduce maintenance.
  • Portage Lakes & Ellet: Lakefront garages and basements stay dry and protected, even during spring thaws or summer storms.
  • Fairlawn, Stow, Cuyahoga Falls: Suburban homeowners love the customizable flake blends that match their décor and withstand daily family life.

Supporting Akron’s Community with Local Expertise

As an Akron-based business, Unlimited Designs Flooring & Epoxy understands the city’s architecture and construction trends. We’ve completed projects near the Goodyear Theater, in the heart of Firestone Park, and throughout the North Hill and Merriman Valley neighborhoods. Our local knowledge means we select the right materials and installation techniques for long-lasting results—no matter where your property is located.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Quartz Flooring Specifics

Is it hard to clean?
Because of the texture, you cannot use a cotton string mop (it will shred). We recommend using a deck brush and a squeegee, or a mechanical floor scrubber for large areas. The floor is seamless, so dirt lifts right off.
How long does it last?
Yes! Quartz sand is UV stable. It is an excellent choice for pool decks, patios, or walkways in Portage Lakes where slip resistance is a safety priority during wet weather.
Can you broadcast over cracks?
The full broadcast system is excellent at hiding repairs. We fill cracks with epoxy paste first. Once the chips are broadcast over the repair, the crack becomes completely invisible.
