The Heavy-Duty Standard for Commercial & Residential Spaces

Seamless, Sanitary, and Built for Abuse

At Unlimited Designs Flooring & Epoxy of Akron, we know that sometimes, less is more. Our Solid Flat Epoxy Floor Coating systems provide a clean, uniform, and incredibly durable surface that gets the job done. Whether you run a machine shop in Barberton, a commercial kitchen in Cuyahoga Falls, or just want a pristine, dust-free workshop in your Green home, solid color epoxy is the practical choice.

Unlike flake or metallic systems which focus on decoration, solid epoxy focuses on visibility and utility. It brightens up dark spaces by reflecting light, makes spotting dropped screws or spills easy, and provides a seamless barrier against chemicals, oil, and water.

Why Choose Solid Color Epoxy?

Performance Meets Affordability

Solid color epoxy is often the most cost-effective high-performance flooring option available in Northeast Ohio. But "economical" doesn't mean "cheap."

Key Advantages:

  1. High Visibility: A bright gray, beige, or white floor reflects overhead lighting, reducing the need for extra fixtures in large warehouses or basements.
  2. Easy Sanitation: There are no grout lines, seams, or textures for bacteria or dirt to hide. This makes it USDA-approved for food prep areas and medical facilities.
  3. Chemical Resistance: Our industrial-grade epoxy stands up to hydraulic fluids, gasoline, bleach, and acids common in Akron’s manufacturing sector.
  4. Dust Proofing: Bare concrete sheds dust constantly. Epoxy seals the slab completely, keeping your inventory, cars, or equipment clean.

Ideal Applications in Akron

Where Functionality Matters Most

We install solid epoxy systems across Summit County in environments that demand toughness.

Industrial & Commercial

  • Warehouses & Factories: Forklifts, pallet jacks, and heavy machinery roll smoothly over our cured epoxy.
  • Auto Mechanic Shops: Oil and grease wipe right up. We can even add safety striping in "Safety Yellow" to mark walkways or hazards.
  • Commercial Kitchens: A seamless cove base (where the floor curves up the wall) makes cleaning easy and passes health inspections in Downtown Akron restaurants.
  • Airplane Hangars: Resistant to Skydrol and aviation fuels.

Residential

  • The "Working" Garage: For the homeowner in Tallmadge who works on cars. If you drop a small washer or screw, you can find it instantly on a solid gray floor (unlike a busy flake floor).
  • Basement Laundry Rooms: A clean, waterproof surface that protects against washer leaks.
  • Utility Rooms: Protect your furnace and water heater areas from concrete dusting.

Our Installation Process for Solid Epoxy

Preventing the "Orange Peel" Effect

Installing a solid color floor requires more precision than flake floors because there are no chips to hide imperfections. Every trowel mark or roller line must be perfect.
1. Surface Prep (Crucial): We diamond grind the concrete to remove contaminants and open the pores. Since solid epoxy shows texture, we may also apply a specialized "scratch coat" or grout coat to fill in small pits and cracks before the final color coat.
2. Patching & Repair: We use epoxy mortar to fill cracks. We sand these repairs flush so they don't telescope (show through) the final coating.
3. The Base Coat: We apply a high-solids pigmented epoxy primer. This soaks into the concrete and establishes the background color.
4. The Top Coat: We apply a final pigmented wear layer. This can be a high-gloss Urethane (for scratch resistance) or a satin finish (to hide scratches better). We can also add a non-slip aggregate (aluminum oxide) into this coat to prevent slips in wet areas.

Custom Colors & Safety Markings

Match Your Brand or Safety Standards

While "Standard Gray" and "Tan" are the most popular choices in Akron, we offer a wide spectrum of colors.
  • Safety Yellow: For designated walkways or hazard zones.
  • Safety Red: For fire extinguisher areas.
  • Bright White: For laboratories or high-tech assembly rooms.
Custom Branding: We can match your company colors for a cohesive look in your facility.

Why Akron Homeowners and Businesses Trust Flake Epoxy Flooring

Local Landmarks, Neighborhoods, and the Akron Advantage

Akron, Ohio is a city with a rich industrial legacy, diverse neighborhoods, and iconic destinations like the Akron Art Museum, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, and the Akron Zoo. Whether your property is nestled near the historic Highland Square, bustling downtown, or along the scenic Cuyahoga Valley National Park, maintaining clean, attractive, and durable floors is essential—especially with Northeast Ohio’s changing seasons.

Akron’s Unique Climate and Flooring Challenges

Akron’s weather is known for its humid summers, snowy winters, and frequent freeze-thaw cycles. This leads to:
  • Concrete sweating or dampness, especially in basements and garages
  • Salt and de-icing chemicals tracked in from winter roads, causing pitting or staining
  • Expansion and contraction in older concrete slabs, leading to cracks and surface wear
Flake epoxy flooring is specifically designed to address these local challenges. Its seamless, non-porous surface prevents moisture intrusion, resists the corrosive effects of road salt, and bridges minor imperfections in aging concrete. The durable topcoat stands up to heavy equipment, foot traffic from events at Canal Park, and even the rigors of hosting friends after a day at Summit Metro Parks.

Enhance Your Property Near Akron’s Landmarks

  • Highland Square & West Hill: Older homes benefit from epoxy’s ability to hide existing concrete flaws, adding modern appeal without expensive slab replacement.
  • Downtown Akron & The University of Akron Area: Businesses, restaurants, and campus facilities enjoy easy-to-clean, eye-catching floors that impress customers and reduce maintenance.
  • Portage Lakes & Ellet: Lakefront garages and basements stay dry and protected, even during spring thaws or summer storms.
  • Fairlawn, Stow, Cuyahoga Falls: Suburban homeowners love the customizable flake blends that match their décor and withstand daily family life.

Supporting Akron’s Community with Local Expertise

As an Akron-based business, Unlimited Designs Flooring & Epoxy understands the city’s architecture and construction trends. We’ve completed projects near the Goodyear Theater, in the heart of Firestone Park, and throughout the North Hill and Merriman Valley neighborhoods. Our local knowledge means we select the right materials and installation techniques for long-lasting results—no matter where your property is located.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Solid Epoxy Specifics

Will hot tires pick up the paint?
This is not paint; it is industrial epoxy. When properly prepped (ground) and installed with high-quality solids, our floors are immune to hot tire pickup.
Does solid epoxy scratch?
All flooring scratches eventually. However, solid epoxy is extremely hard. If scratches do occur over years of heavy forklift use, the floor can be easily "screened and recoated" for a fraction of the cost of a new floor.
Is it slippery?
High-gloss solid epoxy can be slippery when wet. For mechanic shops or wash bays, we highly recommend adding our "shark grip" non-slip additive to the final coat.
